Whiskered bat
Myotis mystacinus
Ystlum barfog
![]() |
Status:
The status of whiskered bats in Snowdonia is currently unknown due primarily to the difficulty in separating this species from the closely related Brandts bat using bat detectors and sound analysis equipment. As with all British bats, the whiskered bat receives full legal protection under both UK & EU legislation.
The whiskered bat is widespread in the UK, with the exception of the northern half of Scotland. It is also found throughout much of Europe but accurate distribution on a wider scale is difficult to establish due to the difficulty in separating whiskered bats from other very closely related and similar species. In many cases in the UK the whiskered bat has not been separated from the very similar Brandts bat and all have simply been classified as whiskered / Brandts.
