Status:

An introduced species, although present in UK since the Iron Age.  Considered a widespread pest species.

House mice are thought to be relatively common and widespread but this is not shown in our records.  This might be because house mice are largely commensal mammals, i.e. live in close proximity to people, and not everyone is happy to divulge their near neighbours!  However, where we do know that there are mice living near to people, they nearly always turn out to be wood mice.  Wood mice are considered a competitor of house mice and might be restricting their distribution in Snowdonia.  It is also likely that there are more house mice to be recorded.
