Status:

The common shrew is a native, widespread mammal, common throughout Snowdonia, Wales and the UK. It is found in much of Europe, but is absent from Ireland. The species is partially protected in the UK under Schedule 6 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981 and is listed under Schedule III of the Bern Convention.  This means a license is required to trap shrews or keep them in captivity.

Although we have few records for common shrew in Snowdonia, this reflects more the fact that recording them is difficult than that there are few around.  Where we do actively look for them, they are usually recorded.  Common shrews are found in most habitats, from woodland to hedgerows and field margins, to sand dunes and gardens.
