Brandts bat
Myotis brandtii
Ystlum brandt
![]() |
Status:
The status of Brandts bats in Snowdonia is currently unknown due primarily to the difficulty in separating this species from the closely related whiskered bat using bat detectors and sound analysis equipment. However, several individuals have been closely examined ‘in the hand’ and positively identified as Brandts bats. As with all British bats, the Brandts bat receives full legal protection under both UK & EU legislation.
The Brandts bat is widespread in Wales and England but absent from most of Scotland. It is also found throughout much of Europe but accurate distribution on a wider scale is difficult to establish due to the difficulty in separating whiskered bats from other very closely related and similar species. In many cases in the UK the Brandts bat has not been separated from the very similar whiskered bat and all have simply been classified as whiskered / Brandts.
