The badger is common and widespread throughout Snowdonia although slightly less common in some of the more rocky upland areas. The animal is most abundant in lowland areas where foraging is more productive. One of the earliest post-glacial records of the badger was found in Kendrick’s cave, just outside Snowdonia.
The badger is found throughout most of Northern Europe and as far east as Siberia and is widespread and relatively common throughout Britain and Ireland. Although the badger has no legal protection in Europe, the animal is protected by UK legislation under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992. This is not however due to rarity but to protect the animal from persecution.
